The deadline is fast approaching in Arriva’s hunt for a collection of regionally-inspired names for their brand new fleet double-deck eco-buses in Leicestershire.

Having invested £6m in the delivery of 35 new vehicles to bolster routes that serve Melton Mowbray, Blaby, Lutterworth, Enderby and Narborough, Arriva are keen to officially mark their arrival by giving 10 of the fleet an individual and unique identity that will aptly reflect the local community.

As such, Arriva’s customers are now being asked to submit their thoughts on notable people who hail from throughout the Leicester area, who they believe deserve to be immortalised on board the new vehicles.  The deadline for nominations is 3rd August, with the winning entries unveiled during a glittering event in Leicester city centre on 18th August.

Arriva’s area managing director, Simon Mathieson said: “We’re hoping that these new vehicles will make a real difference to our customers in Leicestershire, but to make sure they truly become part of the community here, we wanted to instil some local pride in them by naming each one in honour of some the County’s most deserving individuals.

“We want to hear about your local stars - the people or groups that make this community great. Old or young, if they have achieved something outstanding which you think is worthy of some real applause, then we can help you do just that by having their names appear on the outside of one of our buses, as well as being featured on commemorative plaque on the outside on the vehicles.”

The new buses are being launched as part of the wider ‘Leicester Stars’ initiative, which pledges to make network improvements throughout the county in support of the business’ on-going commitment to enhancing customer experience through providing better quality bus travel. The vehicles will provide premium level comfort and connectivity for customers with E-Leather seating and USB charging points as standard, but will also be the greenest diesel buses in the county, featuring the very latest low-emission engines and stop-start technology.

Routes receiving new vehicles are 5/5A, operating every 10 minutes during the daytime to Melton Mowbray, 84/85 with departures every 10 minutes from St Margaret’s Bus Station serving Aylestone and Lutterworth, and 50/50A which runs every 20 minutes to Narborough.

Naming suggestions should fall into the following categories. The top ten names will be ‘written in the stars’ on buses across the fleet, with an additional two buses being named by Arriva’s local employees.

  • Star Local Hero
  • Star Sportsperson
  • Star Charity Worker
  • Star Musician
  • Star Youngster

To nominate someone, please either email us their name and why you’d like to name a bus in their honour to names@arriva.co.uk, contact us via Facebook or on Twitter, or visit the website at https://www.arrivabus.co.uk/stars.
